God Knows No Controversy

"What do you think about it?"

"Well, I think...."

We're quick to give our opinion on controversial issues such as gun control laws, funding abortion with tax dollars, and overseas aid. How can we resolve the controversies?

Once two sisters were trying to remember Mama's homemade biscuit recipe. "Mama always uses cream of tarter in the recipe," one of the sisters remembered.

"Oh, no -- you're thinking about her meringue. Mama puts cream of tarter in her meringue to keep it from falling."

"I'm sure she uses it in her biscuits also, that and two or three teaspoons of baking powder."

"Don't you remember? Mama always brags about making her biscuits with baking soda and buttermilk."

"No, it's her Buttermilk Fudge Cake that she uses the buttermilk and baking powder in! Cream of tarter goes in the biscuits."

"Hey, why don't we write and have Mama send us the recipe for her biscuits?"

When they went to the source of authority, the controversy was settled. I don't know whether Mama used baking powder and cream of tartar or soda and buttermilk, but once Mama provided her recipie, thee could be no question for the sisters.

In fact the controversy was settled before that as far as Mama was concerned. To her there was never any question about it. She knew how she made her biscuits.

God knows how he set up His world. He knows all the recipes for the right way to live. And He hasn't hidden those recipes from us. They are all written down in the Book He gave us -- the Holy Bible, the Word of God.

There is no controversy as far as God is concerned. His recipes have already been established. The reason we can't resolve the controversies of our day is that we look to our own opinions instead of looking to our Source of authority.

No matter what I think would be best, God has already told us that we should follow The Way of the Word:

"Forever, O Lord, thy word is settled in heaven." (Psalm 119:89.)
