Everybody is wrong sometimes! I'm sticking with

The Way of the Word

Everybody Who?

"But everybody's doing it!" Every parent has to deal with this argument sooner or later.

How do you answer your child? Do you remind him that his name is not "Everybody?" Do you tell him that he's not going to do it, period? Do you sit down with him and explain why you won't permit him to join "Everybody?" Or do you give in, deciding that if "Everybody's" parents are letting "Everybody" do it, it can't be all that bad?

How do you decide whether a thing is right or wrong? Do you go by what your parents allowed you to do ? Were they always right? What about the issues of the 21st century? Did your parents teach you how to deal with them?

Do you go by the standards your friends suggest? What's the difference between your "Everybody" and your child's "Everybody?"

Do you follow your own conscience? Ah, but is it trustworthy? Is it consistent? Is it wise?

There is only one authoritative source to which we can go. The Bible addresses the issues we face today: family breakdown, drugs, immorality, homosexuality, the occult, abortion. When we use the Bible as our source of authority, our children's argument is not against us. They know they must give account to God. God set the standards long ago.

Our children may not always do what is right, just as we may not. But we are all more prone to do what is right when we measure ourselves by God's standards instead of "Everybody's." Each of us has to decide whether we will follow "Everybody" and live according to the way of the world, or follow God and live according to The Way of the Word:

"Go in by the small gate. The gate is big and the road is wide that goes to death. Many people go that way. The gate is small and the road is not wide that goes to life. Not many people find it." (Matthew 7:13-14 The Bible in Worldwide English)
