A Breach of Brothers

The first twin was a cunning hunter,
a man of the field,
but his brother was content to dwell
inside the tent.
The elder came in from the field
weary,
faint,
and smelled the tempting brew
of his younger sibling.

"Feed me, my brother," he cried.

"Not so quickly, the younger replied
and stayed his hand.
"Sell me your birthright.
Then you may eat."
(For the younger held the birthright
in high esteem.)

But the elder regarded it lightly,
and sold his birthright for
a morsel of meat.

Many years later,
the man who had despised his birthright
wept in agony,
"Bless me.
O my father, bless me."
And his malicious heart
bred contempt for his younger twin.

Oh, Esau, can't you see.
Your brother could not have destroyed you.
You imprisoned Jacob in your mind,
yet he was free.
But your malice
captured
you.
