The Rest of God : Restoring Your Soul by Restoring Sabbath by Mark Buchanan
Here are some of the comments our leaders shared as we got into the first couple chapters of this book:
"But as 'The Rest of God' first chapter, near the end, says
(my paraphrase): Doing what God called us to do is the best
and most rewarding of all. And we need to do it as unto the
Lord, in a spirit of worship. That was a blessing to me."
"God's desire for each of us to have a
renewing of the mind has been on my mind a lot lately ... and here comes Mark Buchanan writing about this
exactly. ... The idea that part of the rest
of God lies in the ability to have sabbath moments throughout my
regular day rings so true with me, but I know I'm often very far from
looking at my everyday delights and challenges through God's eyes.
The book is really encouraging my resolve with God's help to fully
live in each moment. Right in this moment, in this day, all is well -
it's when I look ahead that fear regains its grip once again. That's
a little of what I've gained to this point."
"I do think everyone needs to learn to rest in the Lord in every part of life. I like the idea of 'sabbath moments' in our daily life. I think if we can learn to live this way we will enjoy our life so much more."
"I stay at home with my kids, and I do my chores ... and I seem to have
time to REST in God, I just never choose to do so. My Sundays are one
of my busiest days, per se. I think this book might be slow at
first, but so far, I am enjoying the revelation that is going to come
forth."
"The idea of incarnating changes in thinking through actions - liturgy, symbolism, gesture - appeals to me, even as I think how on earth will I find time to do it... I think "I haven't time" is one of my grooves in the mind that needs to be re-channelled by the grace of God. I pray for the discipline to just begin putting some of these suggestions into practice."
"I have been focusing on finding "Sabbath moments" with my family ~ moments during the day when the children and I are reading together, or moments in the evenings when we all talk together with dh when he comes home, but I still haven't found those moments for MYSELF ~ those moments alone with God, or moments, even if I'm not alone, to just rest in and enjoy His presence. I'm not sure I know how to do that!"
We may not know how to find The Rest of God now, but we know this is what we need. As we study this book, and apply it's truths in our lives, we look forward to experiencing "The Rest of God."
