A Bible Riddle for Young People
I wanted my son to be aware of the dynamic impact God's word could have in his life. I wanted him to have an awesome respect for the verses he read rotely each week. I wanted him to recognize their potential and to see a little hint of the great power that lay dormant, ready to be unleashed in his life.
So I wrote a riddle for him to read each time he read the second set of Bible verses. After the first reading of the riddle he began guessing answers. A few days later, I shared with him that the answer is the actual typed pages of Bible verses he held in his hand.
Here is the explanation of how this relates:
- When you've used all my reward, you still have my reward.
When he used all the reward of the dollars he got for reading the verses, he still had the real reward of the treasure he was putting in his heart, the Word of God.
- You'll find me in places you'd least expect if you first find me where you'd expect.
He expected to find God's Word on these pages. If he was faithful to find the Word there, it would leap beyond those pages to pop into his mind at times he was least expecting, offering him help and hope.
- You have the power to energize me, and I have the power to energize you.
He could energize the Word in his life by reading these pages. The Word could in turn energize him by a transforming work in his heart.
- If you hide me in the right places, you'll find me in all places. If you hide me in the wrong places, you'll never find me.
If he hid the Word of God in his heart, he would find it coming to mind everywhere he went. If he hid it on a shelf, never to be read, he would never find it in his life.
- I am worth only pennies, yet I am worth more than all the money in the world.
The paper these verses were written on was worth only penies. Yet the richness of what was said there was worth more than money could ever buy.
- Everyone can speak me, but not everyone can hear me.
Everyone can speak these verses, but not everyone can hear the message that they hold. Only when we are willing to let God shed his light on his Word and apply it to our hearts can we really hear it.
- You are tired to speak me, but you are rested to hear me.
He often became tired of reading these verses. We talked about how, when he really listened to what they were saying, they brought rest and peace to him.
- I can be easily destroyed, yet I will never be destroyed.
He could have easily destroyed these pages. Yet the Word that God has spoken, will never be destroyed, and once placed in his heart, it will never be destroyed from him.
- You can crumple me in your hand, yet I can break you.
He could have crumpled these pages, yet the truths shared in them can break our iron wills and cause us to bow before the King of kings.
- I can get inside you, and you can get into me.
The Word of God written on these pages can get inside our hearts, and we can get deeply into and engrossed in the wonders that God shares for us there.
